Constructivism is a great theory founded by John Dewey, Jean Piaget, John Jerome Bruner, and Lev Vgotsky, which should be incorporated into the classroom.
Constructivist teachers are unlike traditional teachers when it comes to the classroom such as: students being grouped or paired where collaboration can take place. They also enhance resources further than a textbook.
The classroom is student-centered and the teacher is a guide and enabler in discussions and lessons. Having students be involved with one another enables further knowledge and critical thinking skills because it requires them to see other's point of view. The students will be engaged, reflective, collaborative, and problem solvers by working together.
Assessment is different for a constructivist compared to a traditionalist. Constructivist teacher's use assessment as a tool and guide for the student's learning progress and understanding. Some assessment types may include journals, group projects, case studies, and role playing. These types of assessments tend to not stress students because they are not aware they are being assessed.
The Present, Apply, and Review (PAR) Model is a model based on research collected from experiments on what type of teaching promotes the most effective learning for students. This Model emphasizes the student taking more responsibility to their own learning and the teacher acting as a guide, reflecting constructivism.
Present is when new information or skills are presented to the learners. Apply is when the students apply their knowledge in the best way the teacher feels suitable. Review is when the teacher reviews/summarizes what was taught and if what was to be learned is understood.
Reading aloud is a great way to apply the PAR Model in the classroom because you can use different type of assessments from it. You can teach vocabulary, theme, setting, characters, plot, and so forth. As long as there is a discussion before and after the reading, the students will be able to apply what was learned, and the teacher should follow through with a review to reinforce and understand what was taught.
Constructivism has many great benefits to the students that should be a way of teaching in many ways. Everyone has there own teaching style, but I personally enjoy this one and plan to use many ideas in my classroom.
